Brick Masonry & Exterior Restoration
Chicago's brick building stock is among the most extensive in the country. From 1880s greystone two-flats to mid-century commercial facades, Chicago brick requires a masonry contractor who understands the materials, the mortar systems, and the city's climate. (XRB) has worked on hundreds of Chicago brick structures over two decades.
Tuck-Pointing
The removal of deteriorated mortar joints and repointing with fresh mortar matched to the original profile and composition. Tuck-pointing is the single most important maintenance procedure for any Chicago masonry building. Failed mortar joints allow water infiltration that accelerates brick spalling, lintel corrosion, and interior water damage. We perform tuck-pointing on full facades, targeted sections, parapet walls, chimneys, and courtyard walls — and we do it correctly, with proper mortar mix, joint profile, and curing.
Lintel Repair & Replacement
Lintels are the structural steel or masonry members spanning window and door openings in brick walls. In Chicago's freeze-thaw climate, corroding steel lintels expand, crack the brick above them, and eventually fail — creating both structural and water infiltration hazards. We assess, remove, and replace failed lintels with properly sized and coated structural steel, re-lay brick above openings, and restore the facade to weather-tight condition.
Brick Repair & Replacement
Spalled, cracked, or displaced brick compromises both the structural integrity and weather resistance of your building envelope. We source matching brick where possible, execute proper removal and reset procedures, and restore the wall to structural soundness and visual continuity.
Parapet Wall Repair & Rebuilding
Chicago parapet walls take the worst punishment of any masonry element — fully exposed to weather on three sides with no roof protection. We repair and rebuild deteriorated parapets, install proper coping systems, and integrate waterproofing to prevent recurrence.
